The rand weakened against the dollar on Friday to a level last seen in November 2016, as a combination of local and US political issues took a toll on emerging-market currencies. The rand hit an intra-day worst of R14.4189/$ in risk-off trade, even weaker than the levels it reached in the aftermath of the disappointing medium-term budget policy statement that Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba delivered last month.
