The results of a national land audit released last week by AgriSA show that the willing-buyer, willing-seller approach to land reform is working and there is no need for expropriation, says AgriSA president Dan Kriek. "There is no need to go the radical route," he says. President Jacob Zuma wants the constitution to be changed to allow for expropriation without compensation. Although this is not ANC policy, it is a view that enjoys popular support within the party and is a central plank of EFF policy. But, says Kriek: "The elephant in the room over the last 23 years of democracy has been the absence of a national, credible land audit. Because we had no factual basis to work on, we went into a mad frenzy thinking we aren't making any progress with land reform."
