The future of electric vehicles in South Africa was given a boost last week when the head of Audi South Africa confirmed that his company would be willing to work with Nissan and BMW in their rollout of charging stations for vehicles across South Africa. No fewer than 10 manufacturers are expected to bring electric vehicles into the country in the next three years, allowing South Africa to join the worldwide EV revolution. Last week, Bank of America Merrill Lynch predicted that electric vehicles would reach global penetration of 12% by 2025, 34% by 2030, and 50% by 2050. In a report entitled "Global Automobiles: Global Electric Vehicle Primer: Fully charged by 2050", the bank said that take-up would be driven by a combination of changing customer preferences, increasingly viable product, regulation and infrastructure.
