Washington — On Wednesday, the US treasury department imposed new sanctions on five Russians and Chechens, including the head of the Russian Republic of Chechnya, for alleged human rights abuses. The new sanctions blacklisted Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the department said in a statement. US authorities have accused Kadyrov of overseeing "an administration involved in disappearances and extrajudicial killings". Kadyrov reacted to the news with his usual defiance. "A sleepless night is waiting for me," Kadyrov wrote, apparently sarcastically, on his Instagram account. "I can be proud that I’m out of favour with the special services of the USA. In fact, the USA cannot forgive me for dedicating my whole life to the fight against foreign terrorists among which there are bastards of America’s special services."
