Mnangagwa to be sworn in as Mugabe’s successor on Friday, says speaker Jacob Mudenda
A hero’s welcome awaits the former vice-president, who fled Zimbabwe after being axed by Mugabe
Harare — Jacob Mudenda, Zimbabwe’s speaker of parliament, has said former vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as head of state on Friday, after Robert Mugabe’s resignation on Tuesday. Mugabe announced his resignation as an impeachment process to remove him was under way at a joint seating of the national assembly and the senate. Mudenda told journalists at a press briefing on Wednesday that the ruling Zanu-PF party had since written to him to indicate its preferred candidate to succeed Mugabe, and they had named Mnangagwa. The choice was confirmed at a Zanu-PF central committee meeting on Sunday.
