Komphela slams ‘pathetic’ pitch
Coach Steve Komphela complains about the state of the stadium’s pitch, which is also used for rugby
Kaizer Chiefs’ poor start to a premiership season under coach Steve Komphela continued on Sunday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bloemfontein Celtic in their opening match of the new campaign at Free State Stadium. Chiefs had lost two years in a row under Komphela on the opening day and Eric Mathoho’s opening goal in the 36th minute appeared to finally end this unwelcome statistic. Mathoho rose majestically to meet a Keagan Buchanan corner and the defender powered home a header that beat Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb. A rare opening day win under Komphela appeared to be in the bag until Chiefs’ defender Lorenzo Gordinho handled the ball inside the penalty area with 17 minutes to go. Atusaye Nyondo made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo the wrong way.
