Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter says he has found a way to use the African Nations Championship (Chan) and Cosafa Cup to his advantage rather than to keep treating the tournaments as an inconvenience.

Both are played outside the Fifa calendar, which means clubs are not obliged to release players. This results in Bafana coaches using players who would normally have no chance of wearing a national shirt.

But Baxter says he has found a way to make the two unwanted tournaments work for SA. ‘‘I think we have found at least a way we can approach Cosafa and Chan and it will serve South African football‚" he said.

Bafana beat Botswana 1-0 in a Chan qualifier on Saturday for a 3-0 aggregate. They will play Zambia in the next round.

Rather than send out squads of players who are unlikely to be selected again in the future‚ Baxter called up young players and gave some of them priceless international experience.

"The younger ones have thrown their hats in the ring‚ but are they ready now? No‚ they are not. But we have Zambia now and the young ones will get a couple of international games," he said.
