The leading men’s and women’s teams in the Absa Cape Epic celebrated their third wins in three days on Tuesday, but both teams resisted any talk of the race having been won yet. The Swiss pair of Nino Schurter and Lars Forster (Scott-Sram) stretched their lead in a men’s race that was expected to be tight and tense in 2019, and now lead by more than four minutes from the German-Brazilian combination of Manuel Fumic and Henrique Avancini (Cannondale). Fumic and Avancini had to settle for third on the day behind Spaniard Sergio Gutiérrez and Czech Ondřej Cink (Kross-Spur). An attack by Schurter and Forster near the end of the 90km stage from Hermanus to Oak Valley caused them to win by just 30 seconds on a day when the lead changed hands several times.
