One could say that jockey Piere Strydom, who turned 51 in June, is taking his foot off the gas in the twilight of his career, but he remains a firm favourite with racing fans. "Striker", as he is affectionately called, has ridden in 600 fewer races this season than younger rivals such as Muzi Yeni, Craig Zackey, Ryan Munger and Lyle Hewitson. Even so, he has ridden more than 100 winners this term and his strike rate of 22% winners to rides is identical to that of champion elect Anthony Delpech. He has a busy weekend at Greyville, where he is to partner Captain Splendid for trainer Justin Snaith. The gelding will be out to get his revenge on Hermoso Mundo, who was awarded the Gold Vase on July day following an objection.
