One of the things said most frequently about Cyril Ramaphosa is that “he is playing the long game”.
This theory is used to explain why he sat alongside Jacob Zuma in the cabinet for four years and in the ANC for five, saying nothing while Zuma’s excesses spun out of control and the state was hollowed out and corrupted. It also explains why he trod so carefully with the composition of the last cabinet, allowing even the deeply compromised to serve.
