The ANC top six leaders remain divided over President Jacob Zuma’s fate as the country’s head of state. ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking to international media in Davos last week, gave a clear indication that Zuma’s exit would be managed carefully. He has been mandated by the ANC’s national executive committee, along with the rest of the top six ANC leaders, to manage Zuma’s exit. His comments appear to have mobilised Zuma’s opponents and loyalists in the top six, with Ace Magashule and Jesse Duarte, the secretary general and deputy secretary general respectively, stepping up their efforts to defend Zuma. On the ground, the pair is moving to recapture the provinces to ensure that those backing Zuma and his candidate, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, could once again be in the pound seats to lead the ANC.
