Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has come to chief whip Jackson Mthembu’s defence by laying into six ANC MPs and labelling their conduct as ill-disciplined. The six said Mthembu had colluded with the opposition in Parliament’s state-capture inquiry and debate into state-owned enterprises. Ramaphosa was speaking to reporters on Thursday during a networking breakfast with the press gallery association in Parliament. His remarks come as Parliament’s inquiry into state capture at Eskom has gained momentum amid resistance.

The ANC MPs — including Adv Loyiso Mpumlwana, Mervyn Dirks and Moloko Maila — held a briefing at which they accused Mthembu of colluding with the DA and inquiry evidence leader Adv Ntuthuzelo Vanara to smear the state. Media owner Mzwanele Manyi has since apologised to Mthembu on behalf of ANN7 for airing the “defamatory” briefing conducted by the ANC MPs.
