Bolstered by a recent Cabinet statement, leaders of small opposition party the African Independent Congress (AIC) are optimistic that the town Matatiele will have been reincorporated into KwaZulu-Natal from the Eastern Cape, by June 2018. This comes after the Cabinet recently agreed to investigate re-demarcating the boundary between the two provinces to accommodate the demands of the AIC. Soon after the August 2016 local government elections, the AIC — which was formed in 2005 to fight for the reincorporation of Matatiele into KwaZulu-Natal — entered into a coalition with the ANC. Thanks to the coalition, the ANC retained Ekurhuleni, the only metro it controls in Gauteng, and Rustenburg in the North West. In return, the ANC committed to working towards the re-incorporation of Matatiele into KwaZulu-Natal.
