South Africans will hear from Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi for the first time about allegations of nepotism and spending on family and friends in her department. The Sunday Times has reported that after she was appointed to the department five months ago, Muthambi spent R300,000 on a trip for 30 friends and family members who travelled to Cape Town for her budget vote speech. She has also been accused of nepotism for allegedly hiring friends and family to join her support staff unit of 27 employees, which goes against provisions that allow her to appoint 10 staff members and  two advisers only. The portfolio committee on public service and administration, chaired by Dr Makhosi Khoza, has summoned Muthambi to Parliament to account for the wasteful expenditure and to provide explanations for her new hires on Tuesday.
