The ANC in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal smoked the peace pipe on Monday in a bilateral meeting, where they agreed to reject the winner takes all principle when the party elects its new leadership in December. This means that both provinces — significant in their own right — have rejected slates and are opting a more unitary approach to ANC succession, in which there is no outright winning group that will take over the party in December. KwaZulu-Natal is firmly behind Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma while Mpumalanga has not thrown its weight behind her, despite being part of a core group aligned to President Jacob Zuma — who has effectively endorsed Dlamini-Zuma. On Friday, the Mail & Guardian reported that Mpumalanga premier and ANC chairperson David Mabuza was threatened with arrest if his province did not support Dlamini-Zuma. Earlier in 2017, Mabuza allies said that he was uncomfortable with the Gupta family and was cautious not to associate himself with the family.
