A vote of no confidence in Gauteng Premier David Makhura has failed. Parties debated the motion, initiated by the EFF and seconded by the DA, during a sitting of the provincial legislature on Tuesday. Makhura will keep his job as premier after 37 members of the legislature voted against the motion of no confidence, compared with the 29 who voted for it. There was one abstention. The motion was tabled following the death of more than 100 psychiatric patients who were moved from Life Esidimeni facilities to unlicensed nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). The DA claimed on Monday that there was evidence that Makhura knew about the transfer of patients despite him saying he did not.
