EXCLUSIVE: EFF blamed for collapse of coalition
Metsimaholo mayor Sello Hlasa blames the EFF for 'siege', but is said to have aligned himself with the ANC
Metsimaholo mayor Sello Hlasa has blamed the EFF for the collapse of the coalition government in the northern Free State municipality, which saw him replace his entire mayoral committee with ANC councillors. After the August local government elections, the DA, EFF, Freedom Front Plus and the Metsimaholo Community Association (MCA) joined forces to govern the council. The EFF is not in a formal coalition but opted to vote with the opposition to unseat the ANC and hand the mayoral seat to Hlasa’s MCA. The EFF wants to take over the municipality and has the DA’s tentative support. But the existing alliance crumbled after Hlasa was said to have aligned himself with the ANC. "Since I took office I have been under siege by the EFF, they tried to present me as corrupt and discredit me," he said in a Business Day interview.
