President Jacob Zuma did not have to give any re-assurances that he will not remove rogue ministers from his Cabinet, following strident calls by them for his removal as head of state. The attempt to remove Zuma was defeated and ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the matter had been exhausted and was now closed. Zuma’s survival of the attempted putsch at the weekend and the announcement by the ANC on Tuesday that he would not lose his job, saw the rand weaken more than 2% against the dollar before regaining some of its losses. According to insiders no agreement was reached at the three-day national executive committee (NEC) meeting that there would not be a Cabinet reshuffle in the aftermath of the meeting, where Zuma for the first time personally sat through calls for him to be removed as state president by members of his own Cabinet and NEC colleagues.
