THE African National Congress (ANC) might have lost the Nkandla municipality to the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)‚ but its councillor held onto his seat in the Nkandla ward by just 103 votes.Nkandla is home to President Jacob Zuma’s private homestead‚ which was upgraded at a cost of R246m‚ of which Zuma has been ordered to pay R7.8m.Bongokwakhe Mbambo‚ of the ANC‚ beat the IFP’s Phumlani Ngubane by 1‚383 votes to 1‚280 in the local government election in Ward 14‚ Nkandla‚ which was won by the ANC in 2011.In total‚ 2‚706 votes for ward councillor were cast this year. Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate Eric Shange came in third place with 22 votes‚ followed by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) candidate Nondumiso Ndawonde with 21.The ANC also won the proportional representation vote in the ward‚ with 1,402 votes to the IFP’s 1,292.
