THE Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) seems unable to halt its gradual slide in voter support. The party lost two wards to splinter party National Freedom Party (NFP) in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal during by-elections on Wednesday.The Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) on Thursday released the results of nine by-elections held in five provinces.The NFP’ victory signified that the party was still a serious contender for votes in KwaZulu-Natal — the IFP’s former stronghold — despite the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) growing dominance in the province.The ANC managed to win four of the nine by-elections in the five provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal.The party also took a seat from the IFP in Nongoma and retained a ward in Port Shepstone.The ANC’s two other victories were in Tswaing in the North West and Dendron in Limpopo.The Democratic Alliance (DA) became the second-biggest winner, retaining the two wards it had held in Nelson Mandela Bay metro in the Eastern Cape and Parys in the Free ...
