The terror unleashed by a gunman in the relatively sleepy outpost of New Zealand is a grim reminder that the elimination of people need not be from the Islamic or any religious group. The Oslo slaughter, also by a fanatical follower of fascist/neo-Nazi ideologies, and targeting youth not belonging to the Muslim faith, is proof that the installation of ideologues such as Donald Trump fuel the anti Islam, antireligious phenomena, thereby giving future destroyers ammunition to kill and maim. The New Zealand government’s humane approach to the crisis, the personal presence of its prime minister and the subsequent offers of aid to grieving families, are great gestures for a country that has never experienced terror. An emphatic Jacinda Ardern has shown the world a type of statesmanship that will be the envy of other leaders, whose past responses to mass slaughter have been somewhat low-key, rather emphasising revenge and a renewed war on terror.
