Whether stemming from sheer stupidity or arrogance, the Orwellian nature of the ANC's gigantic election posters has sidestepped their collective intelligence. “Big Brother” Cyril Ramaphosa himself beams down beneficently on us “non-people” and says, “The power is in your hands, grow SA.” Days later, Eskom started stage four load-shedding, and confessions emerged that both Kusile and Medupi would be forever crippled by Hitachi design failures, driving home the ANC’s truly stellar achievement of utterly devastating one of the world’s previously best-run power utilities. In another way, the posters are correct, as struggling business owners, faced with an unreliable power supply and almost inevitable industrial action, are trying to find sufficient cash to buy generators to keep their businesses operating and their workforces employed. The supreme irony is in the small print. “This poster was paid for by the political party concerned.” And where do us “non-people” think the money came ...
