Regardless of whether Donald Trump remains president, the US has lost its leadership role and moral authority on the world stage. On the one hand, Trump is merely a symptom of a longstanding fault line in US society, based on deep-rooted prejudices, outdated ideologies and intolerance. On the other, he has become the catalyst for bringing simmering frustrations to the surface by stoking division, hatred, racism and intolerance, reshaping the socioeconomic and political landscape fundamentally. The envisaged physical wall on the Mexican border fades into insignificance compared with the ideological wall being erected between two diverse philosophies in US society. Given the global role of the US, this ideological wall has an impact globally, dividing nations and raising tension far beyond the US borders. This internal battle and inward movement are costing the US its position as leader of the so-called free world and champion of freedom, democracy, peace and equality. The world watch...
