A little bit of clarity and transparency could go a long way towards unwinding the MultiChoice and ANN7 problem. We have been told that DStv does not normally pay for news channels, but we also know that it pays about R140m a year for the Guptas’ ANN7. So why not just make a simple statement revealing how much is paid for each of the news channels in the DStv bouquet and the size of each audience? And better do it now before the information leaks out. By now, of course, all the other news channels know what a great deal ANN7 enjoys despite its tiny audience, so I imagine they are all sharpening their pencils in preparation for a new round of negotiations. And then there’s the question that hasn’t been asked. Shouldn’t ANN7 pay DStv to broadcast its subpar material, as there is no way it can qualify on merit like, say, the BBC?
