Your article suggested that Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane deliberately stays away from Parliament’s mineral resources portfolio committee meeting to avoid being held to account on issues of state capture (Mosebenzi Zwane calls in sick, holding up MPs’ work on state capture, November 29).
For the record, during the last sitting of the committee dealing with the matter, Zwane stated his firm commitment to working with the committee in addressing whatever issues concern him with regard to state capture. That commitment on the side of the minister still stands given the deep respect he has for Parliament — and for the portfolio committee in particular.
He did not call in sick as a ploy to avoid appearing before the committee this week. He was indeed sick and had been in hospital for the past week. From time to time a minister will be unable to attend committee meetings due to conflicting events. The minister has been on an intensive travel schedule recently, promoting SA’s mineral resources sector to global markets as part of attracting investment to the country.
This unfortunately happened to be the case with Zwane with regard to other meetings referred to in your article.
