Allegations that the Department of Water and Sanitation is "in a mess and is dysfunctional" are not only misleading but far-fetched (Water and sanitation department in a mess, says report, November 28). The South African Water Caucus’s poorly researched report makes wild claims about the state of affairs in the department but all it did was compile media clippings, most of which were baseless, and release them to the media as a report. Furthermore, it did a good job of cutting and pasting the auditor-general’s report and presenting it as fact. Key to the report are allegations of corruption and the department’s failure to collect money owed to it by municipalities. Yes, reports of corruption in the department abound, but it is worth noting that various structures are conducting investigations and no official has been arrested or is on trial for corrupt behaviour in the department.
