SA’s slide is not at an end; in fact, it has only just begun. Our government has done very little to ensure that proper mathematics and science training is given in schools and has done even less to encourage pupils to take these subjects. In terms of work-readiness, our country is even more desperate and although there are jobs available, very few people qualify to do them. The director-general of the Department of Labour stated that the unemployed now total 9.8-million people, and with the imminent introduction of a national minimum wage, he would not comment on the fact that the Treasury said it would add a further 750,000 to this figure. The only way to try to turn the tide would be for a new government to introduce encouraging labour regulations and proper education. Michael Bagraim, MPDA labour spokesman
