To cure many of the ills facing the country, I suggest SA must amend the Constitution to provide for constituency-based elections of MPs, as it does for municipal officers. Would those largely rural millions trapped in poverty support ANC-nominated candidates who are clearly the cause of their continuing distress? Would communities living in mining areas accept the plundering and mismanagement of mining-derived income by traditional leaders and other ANC insiders if they could directly vote for representatives in Parliament who would be responsive to their needs? It was the ANC that insisted on the current party-based elective structure as it sought to impose a centralised system that would ensure the very few at the top would be able to impose their will on the majority. Indeed, because of this failure of vision, our country is being pillaged by a small group. Robert StoneLinden
