The education imbroglio, still unresolved after being tampered with by successive ministries, has finally reached its decisive stage. This time the agenda is being set by a noneducation official linked to — you guessed it — the president. With SA’s high unemployment and growth forecast at less than a single-digit percentage, stunting revenue, the very thought of pushing through a renewed education policy drawing funds from an exhausted kitty is as suicidal as employing nuclear power in a near-bankrupt state. The idea of increased taxes and a rise in VAT is equally damaging. The best funders of this ambitious project would be a defence ministry cutback, a smaller cabinet, a freeze in assistance to underperforming state entities and a public service salary moratorium. Forty-billion rand, on top of a revenue shortfall of R50bn, will be the death knell for the country. Modak, Robertsham
