Wild cat strikes, being both unprotected and unproductive, often lead to violence and loss of jobs (Strikers shackle Kusasalethu, November 14). Unfortunately, trade unions still use members as "cannon fodder". Many of these strikes merely send a message to both the employer and investors that the business is not functional, and this often leads to closure, thereby causing further unemployment in a country that is desperately trying to create jobs. Our legislature is in the process of trying to implement amendments to the Labour Relations Act allowing the labour minister to step in and declare strikes nonfunctional in certain circumstances. This power would allow the minister and the Department of Labour to put an end to destructive strikes, to save jobs.
