It was confirmed in Parliament last week that just one of the many Gupta thefts at Eskom was worth R1.6bn. Someone earning R20,000 a month pays R2,798 PAYE tax — a total of R33,576 a year — meaning that R1.6bn stolen is the total tax paid by 47,653 people at that pay level for a year! It has been estimated the Gupta thefts alone have totalled as much as R100bn. Add the other corruption and inefficiencies taking place in government departments and state-owned enterprises and you will quickly see why the country is in such deep financial difficulty.
