It never ceases to amaze me how short people’s memories are. No one remembers the good work Qedani Mahlangu has done, but I don’t forget. Even though she does not have a medical degree or background, she fared better than some other more qualified health MECs.
The Esidimeni tragedy is regrettable and must be fully investigated, but I refuse to buy the notion that Mahlangu is a criminal and fugitive from justice. The witch-hunt campaign by the DA and mainstream media is turning the Moseneke commission into a kangaroo court.
The Mahlangu who rebuilt the Gauteng health service after the mess left by Brian Hlongwa and Nomvula Mokonyane can’t suddenly be a monster. I am disappointed with the Gauteng ANC, which has made her a sacrificial lamb in the hope of regaining the public’s trust.
After the Thabo Mbeki HIV/AIDS fiasco, we should be wiser. Today we know it was not Mbeki alone but the whole ANC that gave us the denialism philosophy. Are we taking out our frustration on Mahlangu because we don’t seem able to hold President Jacob Zuma accountable for all his scandals?
The DA’s Jack Bloom should know better than hunting down Mahlangu. Let’s find out what really happened at Esidimeni.
