It never ceases to amaze me how short people’s memories are. No one remembers the good work Qedani Mahlangu has done, but I don’t forget. Even though she does not have a medical degree or background, she fared better than some other more qualified health MECs. The Esidimeni tragedy is regrettable and must be fully investigated, but I refuse to buy the notion that Mahlangu is a criminal and fugitive from justice. The witch-hunt campaign by the DA and mainstream media is turning the Moseneke commission into a kangaroo court. The Mahlangu who rebuilt the Gauteng health service after the mess left by Brian Hlongwa and Nomvula Mokonyane can’t suddenly be a monster. I am disappointed with the Gauteng ANC, which has made her a sacrificial lamb in the hope of regaining the public’s trust. After the Thabo Mbeki HIV/AIDS fiasco, we should be wiser.
