Ann Bernstein’s article (Jobs plan should make large cities opportunity centres for more people, September 1) struck a chord. In the words of Nelson Mandela, overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. But where is the justice in nearly 40% of SA’s 20-million young people (aged 15 to 34) being unemployed and not being in any form of education or training? This growing number is a ticking time bomb, and defusing it requires joint, swift action. A bona fide collaboration between government and business might be a good start. In fact, there are noteworthy parallels between growing an economy and growing a business. Yet the government seems bent on ignoring this and blundering on autonomously. To cement business growth you need adequate finance, a capable workforce, sound logistics, dynamic management and good products or services. SA Inc already has many of these in place.
