The experience of our tax-practitioner firm is totally contrary to the import of the article by Linda Ensor and Hilary Joffe (SARS amnesty for hidden assets a flop, August 21), and we handled more than half of the 499 applications mentioned in the article. The point is that the revenue service’s special voluntary programme comprises, in our experience, only about 10% of the total applications. An alternate mechanism, termed "normal VDP", is often a more tax-effective route to the regularisation of foreign taxable income.
