Someone once said "the more things change, the more they stay the same". Almost exactly 21 years ago, this country achieved its greatest sporting glory (for me at least) when Josia Thugwane won the gold medal in the men’s marathon event at the Atlanta Olympic games. The next morning I couldn’t get my hands fast enough on our local newspaper, only to look at pictures of the killing of some gangster on the Cape flats. I only found that famous picture of Thugwane entering the Olympic stadium hidden away in the middle pages. Fast forward to this past weekend when, despite the golden achievements of Caster Semenya, Luvo Manyonga and Wayde van Niekerk, I was greeted on Sunday morning by a picture of some "hipster" on the front of your sister newspaper.
