It would seem that the MPs who "dismissed Sassa concerns" with regard to the South African Post Office’s (Sapo’s) ability to take over the distribution of social grants were not acquainted with the concerns of the earlier parliamentary committee that discussed Sapo’s management plans and its proposed turnaround strategy (MPs dismiss concerns over Sassa’s capacity to handle social grants, August 15). Sapo is one of the many National Party government legacies. It was run on subsidies for years, partly with the objective of providing jobs for otherwise unemployable whites. Two further decades under ANC cadre management has not improved matters. Since 2014, the government has had to grant Sapo guarantees of R4.44bn to keep it afloat, in addition to recapitalisation tranches to fund its operations.
