Am I missing something? Magda Wierzycka suggests that "South African corporates have R1.3-trillion in cash to deploy" (Unions need to unite in fight for new jobs, August 16). They are just waiting for the "right leadership" and "business, labour and the government to agree on policies". Please pardon my ignorance. Former president Nelson Mandela, the darling of business, labour and government, worked tirelessly during his term of office to create a conducive environment with sound policies for business to invest in the South African economy and to thrive. But the promised foreign direct investment never materialised. Instead, South African companies, which were built on the exploitation of cheap black labour, left our shores and sought refuge in England. Under the leadership of Thabo Mbeki the South African economy grew, albeit slightly. But it was a jobless growth focused mainly on the financial sector.
