The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is extremely saddened by the recent spate of fatal accidents in our province, in particular one that occurred near Dalton and claimed the lives of five young learners as well as a taxi driver assistant. According to reports, two taxi drivers were allegedly playing a game of "chicken" when the collision took place. There are also claims that the drivers were under the influence of alcohol. In the event that these damning allegations are proved true, we expect the full might of the law to be handed down. We call on the transport MEC, Mxolisi Kaunda, to order a swift and comprehensive probe to establish exactly what happened. We also expect the MEC to cancel the licences of taxi operators whose drivers are found guilty of playing with the lives of passengers; ensure proper and efficient law enforcement by the road traffic inspectorate; engage with taxi associations so that they also play a role in road safety; insist that the associations enforce their own code ...
