Former policeman Joao Rodrigues demonstrated a remarkable memory while giving evidence before Judge Billy Mothle. However, he appeared to occasionally suffer from selective memory loss.
Rodrigues insisted he was left alone with Ahmed Timol and was unable to prevent his fateful exit through a window. I detected a certain hubris about Rodrigues frequently seen in other apartheid policemen giving evidence in court: always confident, but in a recited fashion.
Clearly, the judge is having none of this and is determined to get to the bottom of Timol’s death. Perhaps, we will still see justice done.
