You ran an important article on the AU’s proposed new import levy, alleging that it will violate World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules (AU heading for world trade body conflict over membership levy, July 25). It also reported: "The AU says the 0.2% levy is in line with practice elsewhere, although it does not identify where such taxes are levied. This type of tax is already operational in several regional economic communities, the AU says." To help your author, Tom Nevin, such levies have for years been enforced by the Economic Community of West African States and the East African Community. The WTO has not threatened either of these regional blocs. Keith GottschalkClaremont
