The international picture clearly shows that with proper management, airlines can not only survive but make a profit. There is one good reason why SAA has for so long and so steadily been haemorrhaging money: bad management. Even if it is operating on a poor business model, that still boils down to poor management. So rather than treating the symptoms yet again, if I were Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba (and I’m glad I’m not) I wouldn’t begin to think about bailing out SAA again until the real issue has been addressed. Bring in the most experienced, competent, successful airline managers that can be found, and give them one job — to get SAA right. A cash injection might be necessary to keep the aircraft flying for the time being. It may be expensive, but much cheaper in the long run. GL MansellParkwood
