Julian Denny’s letter refers (Israel’s blatant violation, July 18). In 1967 Israel defended itself against almost the entire Arab world, which went to war to eliminate the Jewish state. Miraculously, Israel won the war in six days. Had it lost the war it would have been its last, as no Arabs would tolerate Jews living in their land. This was illustrated in the 1950s, when 800,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries in the Middle East. This must be the only situation in history where a country is attacked by enemies, defeats them, and is then expected to concede the land won in the war. Israel, for the security of its state, will not return that land. Today Israel still has a large Arab population living as Israeli citizens with full benefits. The vast majority would never return to an Arab country by preference. The Oslo Accord divided the so-called West Bank into three areas.
