Reading the astonishing news that an exit package of R2bn is being negotiated in return for the president leaving office adds more weight to what we have seen over the years — the more corrupt you are, the bigger the golden handshake. The inner circle of the president’s looters have taken huge amounts, or have been given promotions to other lucrative posts when it became too hot in their current positions. It brings to mind the wise words of Aesop’s fables, that are more than 2,500 years old: "We hang petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office." JM BouvierBryanston
