Through the years former president Thabo Mbeki has mesmerised us with his ability to call a spade a manually operated device used for shovelling. Now he is saying MPs are free to vote for a motion of no confidence in the president, irrespective of the position of the parties they represent. They are the voices of the people, not of their parties, he says. I would be grateful if an Mbeki translator can point to a single reference in a speech, statement or writing where he held this position before he left active politics in 2008. Just one opaque, obscure, unclear, dense, difficult, impenetrable, incomprehensible (according to my thesaurus) quotation will be sufficient. Sally Barnard Orange Grove
