The appalling vitriolic attack by Carol Paton on Western Cape Premier Helen Zille makes Business Day look like the gutter press it doesn’t want to be. Never have I seen so much rubbish published over more than half a page of wasted space. The fact is that colonialism has brought tremendous benefits to Africa over centuries. Of course, there has been a negative side few would dispute, but in terms of lifting people from a very primitive lifestyle to a more sophisticated environment that they choose to adopt, there is no argument. Cecil John Rhodes, who established an institution to uplift the intellect of the population from an academic point of view, can only be congratulated. Helen Zille, who comes from a family background of Nazi persecution, is undeniably qualified to speak this truth, however unacceptable it may be to puerile Business Day editorial staff.
