The reason the milestones that were agreed upon by all industry stakeholders at the 2014 Mine Occupational Health and Safety Summit are in danger of not being achieved in accordance with their timeline is that each of the parties is pushing its own political agenda. Industry stakeholders pushing their own agendas is unacceptable as safety is not an independent effort. To see progress and any chance of success we need to look at aligning organised labour, because if we don’t show clear leadership and collaboration we will not be able to eliminate injuries and fatalities. Some employers really disappointed, as the South African Mining Development Association did not even attend the summit. This raises the question whether the parties within the two caucuses can agree among themselves how health hazards and fatalities can be eliminated when all eyes are not on the goals.
