YOUR editorial says US President Barack Obama "may yet turn out to be the best thing to have happened to the US" (Obama’s fitting swan song, January 14). If you measure him on oratory, then yes, he’s been an entertainer par excellence. If you are using former president George W Bush as your yardstick, I concur he is not a hopeless ignoramus.But for those with higher ethical and political standards, judged on actions alone, Mr Obama has come across as a fraud. Fact is, he betrayed citizens of the globe weary of the US politics of exceptionalism. No nation or group of people possesses unique characteristics or values that make them a chosen nation. As the racial debate in SA reminds us, we all share a common lifeboat without exceptions of geography or physiology.What about Donald Trump’s "politics of fear, race-baiting and brute force diplomacy"?
