Consequences for Thabi Leoka’s false PhD, but it is a missed opportunity for companies involved

The JSE has spoken. On Friday, the bourse imposed a R500,000 fine and a five-year directorship ban on Thabi Leoka, rightly responding to her grand and unnecessary act of academic make-believe.
But let’s not kid ourselves. In the grand scheme of corporate shenanigans, R500,000 is little more than pocket change. Let’s not forget that for 15 years Leoka paraded around with a false PhD, deceiving some of the biggest names in the industry and serving on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s advisory committee. That said, this embarrassing public dressing down and the financial penalty are better than nothing. ..
