When newly minted minister of foreign affairs Ronald Lamola spoke during his department’s budget speech this week, he said that “SA proudly places Africa at the centre of its foreign policy”.

Strictly speaking, this is not particularly notable, but if Lamola’s commitment to Africa and non-alignment is sincere, it will manifest in our country projecting a significantly different version of itself. A focus on Africa is long overdue. We have every reason to project a positive continental future into the world and it is right that we confidently occupy our role here...
