France arrests its rioters, but ringleaders of SA’s 2021 riots have still not appeared in court

Riots that rocked towns and cities across France for days on end recently, causing about $1bn in damage, were reminiscent of the upheaval in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in 2021, and attest to the powder keg underlying societies with deeply marginalised communities.
